Personal Connection:
When I was in the seventh grade we went on a field trip to the Milwaukee Folk Fair. It was a very interesting experience, and one that I won't soon forget. Basically, it is like a mini version of the State Fair because there are many different booths/stations that represent a different culture or country. At these stations we were learned more about that culture and essentially became immersed into the different cultures and countries. Also, we were introduced to different types of foods and cultural practices. For example, it is while I was here that I was introduced to Boba tea, I thought it was so different from anything I have even drank before (in a good way). Also I had a vanilla churro while there, and I can still remember how sweet it was and how happy I was after I ate it. I love churros! I also remember watching an Irish dancing performance while there. I have always liked watching Irish dancing performances, and have secretly always wanted to learn how to jig. Before going to the Fair our teachers gave us a mini passports (fake) that we filled out with our information and a picture we drew of ourselves. The passports also included several other pages with a grid on them and in each square there was the name of a different culture/country. As we visited each station, the people running the booths would stamp our passports with their country's individual stamp pattern, which usually included a saying like "welcome" in that country's language. I still have my passport, to remind me of my time there and the memories I made while there.
By going on this field trip in middle school I was exposed to different cultures, dances, foods, etc that I hadn't known existed before. Therefore by being a part of this experience I have opened mind to different places and cultures.
