Bay View Community Center

I have been volunteering at the Bay View Community since October 2017, helping with various events that they have at the center. For example I was able to help prepare food for an event called "Family Chefs." In this event the center gives kids in the community the chance to make recipes with their families, so that they can learn about making food and basic ways to prepare food. By being able to volunteer at the Bay View Community Center I have learned the importance of giving back to your community and helping others. Also I have learned that it's okay to push myself to do things that I may not feel comfortable with especially socially, if I know that the thing is going to help me grow as a person.

Warrens Cranberry Festival

Every year my family and I go to see my grandparents in Tomah, WI for the Cranberry Harvest Festival in Warrens. This year I helped my grandmother by volunteering to help her and the other members of the Haiti Mission Volunteer Group park the huge tourist buses full of people going to shop at the festival. In the Haiti Mission Group, the members (including my grandmother), take a trip to Haiti every year to assist in medical procedures since 2006, because most of the members of the group(including my grandmother) are retired nurses or other medical professionals. In addition to assisting in doing medical procedures, the group also helps with aid in preforming more fun activities like marrying people in Haiti. To help in parking the buses, a group of us would go to "stakeout spot," and essentially wait for the buses to come in and then lead them to a designated area for them to park by driving around in golf carts. I was so happy to be able to help the Mission Group, and go to Cranfest to do some shopping and to try out new foods(when the work was done). I can't wait to help out again, and maybe next time I will be able to actually drive the golf carts!

Happy Endings Cat Shelter

I am so excited to start volunteering at the Happy Endings Cat Shelter, by helping in cleaning up duties and socializing with the cats. I recently went to a informational meeting for new volunteers, and I learned a lot of new things about cats and the care that they require. Also while at the meeting I was able to meet all sorts of new cats and pet them. It made me want to adopt them all. Sadly, our cat is very old and would not do well with other cats. Regardless, I love cats, so I can't wait to get started!

In the summer of my senior year I began volunteering at Happy Endings, my main duties included cleaning the cat's cages, feeding and watering them, and cleaning up the shelter for the "open house" which is when the shelter is opened to the public. This takes place every Thursday and Saturday, please come in on these days if you are interested in adopting. For more information please click on the image on the right below to visit the shelter's website.

I have really enjoyed getting to know the cats at the shelter and working with the other volunteers. Being able to pet and hang out with the cats after the cleaning is done has been really therapeutic for me especially in relieving my anxieties about school.
